“Great-Grandpa, did Mr. Epps and Mr. Burns get mad at you?”

Joseph smiled. “You might say they were a little bothered by my words.”

“What did you do?”

“I kept right on preachin’ Jesus! In fact, it wasn’t but two weeks later that I delivered a similar message at Amiable Baptist and got the same response. I couldn’t stop doin’ what God had called me to do.”

“Great-Grandpa, how do you know if you’re called to preach?”

“Son, if you can keep from it, then don’t.”

“Great-Grandpa, you believe every word in the Bible, don’t you?”

“Son, every jot and tittle. Every single word from Genesis to the maps in the back … well, maybe not the maps.

“Now, there was a rumblin’ among some of the plantation owners and they let me know that I was causin’ trouble for ’em. They were fearin’ there’d be another slave revolt. They never came in person—well, that is except one time, but sent messengers sayin’, ‘Pastor, if you continue, we will be forced to take actions against ya.’”

Dan’s eyes were huge, and his expression was worried. “Grandpa, weren’t ya ‘fraid of ‘em? What they’d do to ya?”

“Not hardly! Not even when William came to express his concerns.”

“What’d he say to ya?”

“He told me he’d heard some talk out of Bayou Boeuf from Epps and Burnses that they’d already given me a warnin’ to stop preachin’ about this slavery thing. He said, ‘They’re gonna take action if you don’t stop.’ William studied my face and said, ‘Pastor, you are my dearest friend and mentor. You’ve always treated me as a son. What are you goin’ to do? I don’t want any harm to come to you.’

“I answered, ‘Tell ‘em I’m preachin’ at Calvary Baptist in Bayou Chicot this Sunday, right near ‘em. Invite ‘em to come, and tell ‘em to bring a covered dish, for we’ll be havin’ supper on the grounds after church.’

“William shook his head and smiled. ‘Pastor, I admire your courage. I’m sure you realize that you will not be safe there.’”

“Great-Grandpa, what were they gonna do to ya?”

“Dan, it didn’t matter what they had planned. It reminded me of one of my favorite stories in the Bible ‘bout a man named Jehoshaphat. He was facing three mighty enemies. He couldn’t have whipped even one of ‘em. He called his people to fast and pray. Jehoshaphat prayed somethin’ like this: ‘Lord, I don’t have the foggiest idea what to do, but my eyes are on You.’

“The Lord spoke words like this to Jehoshaphat: ‘You don’t need to fight in this battle, for the battle is no longer yours, but Mine.’ Son, how many battles has the Lord lost?”

“None!”

“Neither would He this time!”

“But, Great-Grandpa, did ya do anything?”

Joseph smiled at Dan and calmly said, “I went down to Spring Creek, cut me a nice cane pole, and caught me a mess of brim for supper.”
